Pepeta Malawi host a National Advocacy Convening on Termination of Pregnancy.
National Advocacy Convening
Pepeta Malawi held a National Advocacy Convening on 10th December 2021, which brought together young feminists and different stakeholders in the Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) space in Malawi. This convening took place with the aim of revitalizing feminist movement building for the realization of young women’s SRHR in Malawi.
Against this backdrop, the convening focused on discussions around SRHR advocacy in Malawi and the current challenges as well as opportunities where more can be done. There were also conversations that were held around empowering young women and girls to be able to voice out their needs and hold lawmakers accountable.
With the Minister of Gender and several members of parliament present, the convening also provided additional leverage to ensure that Pepeta Malawi is establishing itself as a prominent organisation when it comes to feminist movement building and addressing the various challenges that young women and girls are facing in the country. Offering parliamentary and political leaders this platform as a way to come together and face the facts of the state of women and girls in this country, then contributing towards meaningful solutions that can be explored served to ensure that there is increased ownership of these issues by young feminists who are daring to hold leaders accountable.
The results of the convening included shaping the way forward in the approach towards advocacy of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill in Malawi and how young women can contribute to the cause; insight into how more young women can be empowered to fight for women’s safety and wellbeing at different levels including grassroots activism, feminist organizing and collaboration, as well as politics and influencing; bridging the intergenerational gap through knowledge sharing which will strengthen Pepeta Malawi’s implementation of projects and activities; as well as a new network of allies and members that are aligned with the organisation’s goals.
